Understanding Stainless Steel Grades
SS304 (18/8) and SS316 (marine grade) are the two most common grades in glass hardware. Both offer excellent corrosion resistance, but differ in composition, performance and cost.
SS304: The Workhorse
18% chromium, 8% nickel. Excellent for most indoor applications and standard bathrooms.
- Excellent resistance to freshwater and mild chemicals
- Good formability and weldability
- 15-20% cheaper than SS316
- Adequate for indoor use with proper maintenance
SS316: The Marine Grade
Adds 2-3% molybdenum for dramatically better chloride corrosion resistance. Essential for coastal installations, pool enclosures, and outdoor railings.
The 15-20% price premium for SS316 is worthwhile when hardware will be exposed to salt air or pool chemicals.
How to Verify the Grade
SS304 and SS316 look identical. Verify through mill certificates or portable XRF testing. At AOYU, every batch ships with mill certificates confirming exact alloy composition.
Our Recommendation
Standard bathrooms: SS304. Near saltwater, pools, or harsh chemicals: SS316.
