How much lighter is the aluminum system than stainless?
Aluminum runs about one-third the weight of stainless for a similar profile, so a balcony kit ships and handles noticeably easier - an aluminum base shoe run is typically under half the weight of the equivalent steel one. The trade-off is strength and corrosion behaviour, which is why the same profiles are offered in both materials and the project picks.
Is aluminum safe outside on a balcony fence?
Yes, when the alloy and coating are right. We use architectural-grade aluminum with an anodized or powder-coated surface, which handles normal rain and UV without rusting - aluminum does not rust like steel. The weak points are contact with steel fasteners and salt air, so we use stainless fixings and isolate dissimilar metals. For direct coastal splash, the 316 stainless system remains the safer call.
How does the system attach to the floor and what load can it take?
The base channel is fixed with stainless expansion bolts through the base, with the glass bedded on rubber blocks. Strength comes from the fixing pattern and the glass itself rather than the channel walls - aluminum channels carry infill panels, not the fall load on their own. For infill up to about 1.1 m the standard anchor layout is adequate; confirm glass thickness and wind load and we size the channel accordingly.
What finishes can you apply to the aluminum?
Brushed nickel, matte black and custom colors, done as anodizing or powder coating. Anodizing is the classic outdoor finish - it is part of the metal surface so it does not peel - while powder coating gives a wider color range including RAL matches. Matte black powder and brushed nickel anodize are the two most common for balcony fences; custom colors run at the 500 pc minimum.
Aluminum or stainless - how do I decide for my project?
Use aluminum when weight, cost and color options matter on a normal outdoor or indoor site: balconies, terraces, commercial interiors. Use stainless when the site is coastal, the spec demands high strength in thin sections, or the client expects a polished metal look. For the same geometry stainless costs and weighs more; aluminum is cheaper per metre and easier to handle. Many contractors quote both and let the finish decide.
Does the aluminum channel take the same glass thickness as the steel systems?
Yes - the channel dimensions are shared across the aluminum and stainless base shoe ranges, so the same glass thickness and gasket schedule apply. What changes is the profile wall and coating, not the glass accommodation. If your panels are 12-22 mm, say so when ordering - the gasket set and channel width are matched at production, and a 1 pc sample confirms the fit first.
