Frequently Asked Questions

What components make up the stainless base shoe system?

The system covers the continuous bottom channel (base shoe), end caps, floor-fixing brackets and the rubber setting blocks that hold the glass up off the metal base. It is the framed alternative to clamps - panels slide into the channel instead of being held point by point. Matching top channel or handrail clamps are available if the glass is fixed at both edges.

What glass thickness fits the channel?

The channel is machined for typical balustrade infill - normally 10 to 12 mm tempered glass - and the rubber packing strips close the gap on the actual glass thickness. Because the base shoe is a fixed-width profile, the gasket set is what absorbs the tolerance. Send your glass spec and we confirm the gaskets; for 12-22 mm panels the aluminum base shoe (535) is the better match.

304 or 316 - does it matter for a base shoe sitting on the floor?

Yes, more than on a top rail, because the channel sits where water, mop water and cleaning chemicals pool. 304 is adequate for most interiors and covered terraces. 316 resists the chlorides that pit a polished floor channel over years of exposure to cleaning agents and coastal humidity. Either grade can be supplied in brushed nickel or matte black to match the rest of the system.

How is the channel fixed to the concrete floor?

The channel is drilled and fixed with expansion bolts through the base, then the glass is bedded on rubber blocks and sealed with silicone on both sides. On timber or steel decks we use the matching screw or weld-on brackets. We supply the anchor plan with the order; for typical balcony heights, M8-M10 stainless anchors at 300-400 mm centres are the usual range.

Can I install the glass without drilling into the panels?

Yes - that is the point of a base shoe. The glass stands in the channel on rubber packers with silicone seal, no drilling, which avoids stress concentrations in tempered glass and makes panel replacement simple: pull the old panel, drop in a new one. It also means the glass can be cut square without polished holes, lowering fabrication cost on the glass side.
