Frequently Asked Questions

How does an aluminium U-channel profile fix a glass panel compared to a clamp?

The glass panel slides down into the U-channel and sits on a gasket inside, so the bottom edge of the panel is supported along its full length instead of at points. That makes a U-channel the standard solution for floor mounting a fixed panel, where a clamp could only grip from the side. The 8mm designation means this profile is sized for 8mm glass.

Is this U-channel only for 8mm glass, or does it take thicker panels?

This profile is sized for 8mm glass, per the product title. If your project uses 10mm or 12mm panels, the channel opening needs to match, so let us know the glass thickness and we will confirm the correct channel profile. Using the wrong width leaves the panel loose or forces the gasket to take up too much gap.

Does the channel include a gasket or rubber insert for the glass?

Yes, the U-channel works with a rubber gasket that sits between the glass and the aluminium, cushioning the panel and preventing metal-to-glass contact. This protects the bottom edge of the tempered glass from chips, which matters because the panel's full weight rests on this edge. Confirm the gasket profile you need when ordering.

Why use aluminium instead of stainless steel for the channel?

Aluminium is lighter, easier to cut and drill on site, and cheaper than stainless, which is why it is common for floor and wall channels in frameless shower systems. The trade-off is that bare aluminium can oxidize, so it is usually installed where it is less visible or given a protective surface. For wet floor areas some specifiers prefer stainless; we can quote that alternative.

How is the channel fixed to the floor and does it need to be cut to length?

The channel is cut to your panel length on site or pre-cut by us if you give dimensions, then fixed to the floor with screws through the base or with construction adhesive. The panel is lowered into the gasket-lined channel and the top is secured with clamps or a top channel. Give us your panel lengths and we can pre-cut and quote accordingly.
